about

"While flipping through channels over the summer, I came across a broadcast from the Summer Olympic's "fencing" competition and I was intrigued by the connection between the fencers' feet and their sword motions. Their feet are constantly in motion back and forth within a prescribed area so in my composition they are represented by repeated eighth note patterns in the bassoons. The more jagged lines of music represent the upper body motions of the fencers as they survey the field in front of them, adjust to maintain balance and prepare for lunging and contact. Throughout the piece are a few cluster chord combinations with very unique rhythms to imitate the thrusting of the sword and potential clash of swords. The cluster make up of the chords was chosen because I was fascinated by how they now have electronic suits that they wear which register when a sword comes in contact with the suit by illuminating a light. Musically, that surge of electrical impulses resulting from the contact which results in the illuminated light suggested a cluster chord for each clash or contact instead of a streamlined unison pitch. En garde!"
